What is a superfruit?

First introduced to the food industry in 2005 the term superfruit holds a lot of power.  A superfruit is a fruit, whether common or exotic, that has excellent nutritional value as well as antioxidant properties.  These superfruits also have an appealing taste.

Coining the term superfruit was a marketing strategy to get people to pay attention to health drinks and products and the value that these specific fruits would bring to the consumers health.

When people think of superfruits they often think of exotic plants with strange names.  The list of superfruits is constantly growing though.  Exotic fruits seem too be found on a consistent basis – they meet the requirements and often have a history of use in their native lands, but they are also found in our everyday grocery markets.

Apples, pears, oranges, strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, and bananas are all fruits that are commonly provided at the grocery markets.  These are all superfruits.  They are really rich sources of nutrition and antioxidant properties.  Some of the more commonly recognized exotic superfruits are acai, elderberry, camu camu, wolfberry, and mangosteen.

The world is lacking significant scientific research of these superfruits.  Such research could allow consumers to choose the best fruits possible.  However, a recently developed scoring system has helped to clear things up at list a little bit.  The oxygen radical absorbance capacity can be tested on all fruits and allows consumer to see exactly where the fruits line up in priority.  In 2004 wild blueberries were at the top of the list and since then countless articles have been written on the success of the blueberry and its antioxidant properties.

Superfruits are essential to health and wellness.  Free radicals are eliminated as antioxidants are provided. Bodies are able to heal themselves with the help of these miraculous plants which are most powerful when grown indigenously.
